If your current laptop is running really slowly it might be time for you to buy a new one. But first, before you go out and buy a new laptop you can try a few things yourself to speed it up (these are also applicable to desktop computers).
1. Delete any unused programs. If you have programs on your computer that you’re not using then get rid of them.
2. If that is not enough and you’re computer isn’t older than four-years old then try adding a GB of memory. This is a fairly cheap way of upgrading your laptop.
3. If your hard drive is running out of space then delete everything that you don’t need or want. If you have pictures, video, or music then put it all on disc and then delete it from your hard drive.
4. Add an external hard drive to your laptop. This is probably the easiest way to upgrade your computer.
5. Once you have done all of this run the Disk Defragmenter that should be in your Windows bundle. When you run the Disk Defragmenter it helps your hard drive find files a lot faster than before.
If these steps don’t work (and your computer is older than 4 years) then you may need to replace it. If you need to replace it make sure you wipe the hard drive and recycle it. You can find software and programs online that will wipe all the information off of your computer for you (Apple has this feature built in).
Should You Buy a Windows or Apple laptop?
If you find you need to purchase a new laptop there are really only two options for you when it comes to what type of operating system you should run with. The two options are discussed below.
The latest version of Windows is Windows 7. You can find versions that range in price from $110 to $230. These are off the shelf prices but if you bought a computer that features Windows Vista after June, 2009 then you may be eligible for a free upgrade. If you’re a college student then you can purchase an upgrade for only thirty-bucks.
The best alternative to Windows 7 is an Apple laptop that’s running a Mac OS X operating system. An Apple laptop can run Windows 7 but you have to install it yourself. Apple users generally do not like to run Windows (and vice versa). The latest version of the Apple operating system is Snow Leopard. People who currently are using an Apple laptop can upgrade to the new Snow Leopard system for only $30. If you bought a new Apple computer after June of 2009 then you can purchase an upgrade to Snow Leopard for only ten bucks.
